Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1) agonists continue to surge in popularity largely due to their ability to stabilize blood sugar, curb appetite, and assist with weight loss and weight management.

There are several GLP-1s on the market, but some ones you may be familiar with include Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, and Mounjaro.

When beginning any GLP-1, your doctor will start you a low dose of the drug and slowly increase it over time. Your initial starting dose will continue for your first 4 weeks of treatment. After that, your doctor may increase your dose every 4 weeks, until the drug is working as intended. It may take several weeks to reach the dose that’s right for you.

At the 3-week mark of GLP-1 treatment, the drug hasn’t quite reached a steady level in your body. That’s a process that often takes 4 or 5 weeks to occur, followed by several more months of treatment to experience the full benefits of the drug.

Although 3 weeks is too soon to notice the drug’s full effects, you may still experience certain changes, such as decreased appetite, feeling fuller for longer, or reduced food cravings. You may have fewer side effects, especially those affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. Weight loss varies from person to person, but some people might notice mild weight loss at this stage.

Medical Perspective

“GLP-1 agonists may cause fatigue and other side effects. These effects often improve within a few weeks as your body becomes more familiar with the medication, but it may take longer for some people. You should call your doctor if your symptoms are severe or interfere with your daily life.”

GLP-1 medications, such Ozempic, Wegovy, and othes, help people manage blood sugar levels, provide support for weight management, and more. They slow digestion and reduce hunger. Typically, doctors will start you on a low dose and increase it every 4 weeks, until the right level is reached. By week 3, you might notice decreased food cravings or lessening side effects, but it usually takes several months to see the full results of the drug.
