Launched in January 2025, the amp is a new smart fitness machine designed to support full-body strength training from home, similar to compact home gyms such as Tempo and Tonal. It also offers trainer-led workouts like Peloton.
So, how is it different? Amp stands out for launching with extensive AI-powered features, providing automatic resistance adjustments to match your performance and support fitness goals. It also has a very compact footprint and a sleek design.
The amp was designed by a team of entrepreneurs from Apple, Nike, and Meta, working alongside Sports Science PhDs with experience with NBA, NFL, and Olympic athletes.
Currently, the amp is still in pre-order and has been shipping to early customers. This means limited in-depth hands-on reviews are available.
Fortunately, Healthline has some first-hand insight from our reviewer, Nick Trull, who has been testing the amp since July 2025, using it 2-4 times a week.
So, did amp improve your fitness?
Nick felt that amp made exercising more engaging and attainable, not just for himself.
“[The improvement] is most evident in my wife, who has historically avoided strength training due to lack of confidence and knowledge. She enjoyed the amp, working through 10, 20, and 30-minute sessions. She gained confidence and strength.”
As a fitness enthusiast, Nick felt that amp still benefited his workout routines, thanks to it hitting a range of muscle groups and providing AI-powered coaching.
“You can jump into pre-existing workouts based on your time and intent, or have the AI coach build a workout to fit your specific needs.”
“I found myself adding in additional workouts with the amp to hit the core and auxiliary muscle groups. The AI coaches you through exercise and rest.”
What stood out about amp to you?
Nick has tested other fitness machines, including the Tonal, a market leader. He praises amp’s comparatively small footprint and minimalist design.
“The compact footprint was a big selling point for me, fitting perfectly in our office and workout space without feeling bulky. The sleek, modern aesthetic also makes it an easy addition to any room.”
Nick also noted the gamification of workouts as a distinct feature. “You can choose [the game features], or it appears within certain workouts and exercises, supporting pacing as you move the weight eccentrically and concentrically. It’s similar to a Guitar Hero-style game that gives a score at the end.”
Nick’s verdict on the amp
“My first impression was a win, and not just mine; my wife loved it, too. It has a compact, aesthetically pleasing design that packs a big punch, and it’s powered by a user-friendly app that is easy to navigate.”
“As a user with two kids, where space can be limited, the smaller footprint was attractive. Although the resistance ceiling is lower, I have not missed anything.
For Nick, the pros and cons of the amp include:
- Pros: “The compact design and minimalist footprint, versatility with the accessories and app, and the resistance you can get!”
- Cons: “I would love more personalization, as I believe that the weight selection can often be slightly off, based on my strength level with certain exercises.”
“Overall, I’m a big fan of the amp and have loved the product, app, and results! I recommend it to anyone in the market for a digital strength machine.”
Below we break down the facts about amp, from the workouts to the price point. Watch for Nick’s Notes to gain hands-on insights.
The amp is an AI-powered smart fitness device, so the app is a core part of its functionality. It provides:
- AI-powered coaching
- personalized recommendations
- live progress tracking
- automatic weight adjustments
Amp also features a ‘gamified’ experience, so if you need some incentive to exercise, you may find motivation through racking up points and hitting high scores. Personalized challenges and achievements are given to encourage progress.
The app has a continually growing library of workouts and classes from 20+ trainers. You can also build your own custom workouts within the app and even remove or replace movements during workouts.
App subscription
Currently, the app is only iPhone compatible. Android users may not be able to use the device fully until an Android-compatible version is available.
The app requires a membership subscription of $23 a month, with purchase of the device including a one-year commitment. As the app is a core part of the device’s functionality, it is important to factor in this additional cost.
One membership supports up to 15 household members, making it a useful option for households, workplaces, or other shared spaces.
Nick’s Notes: How easy is amp to use?
“From the first login, the app was easy to navigate, guiding me through both the strength assessment and personalized workouts.
“The strength assessment takes around 10 minutes, and guides you through the exercises with video and audio. It then recommends programming and resistance to support your strength journey.
“I have been very impressed with the intuitiveness and functionality of the amp app.”
The amp device can support over 450 movements.
The amp offers digital resistance ranging from 5 lbs to 100 lbs. The AI can adjust the weight resistance automatically to suit your workouts, or you can manually adjust it using the dial on the device. With a click, the dial can also change modes.
The smart resistance modes include:
- Fixed: This maintains a constant weight throughout the workout.
- Band: This adds resistance as your range of motion goes further from the start position.
- Eccentric: This mode increases resistance when you return to your starting position.
The device can automatically switch between these modes to suit your workout, or you can manually select a mode and adjust the resistance as needed.
Nick’s Notes: What an amp workout looks like
“The workout will depend on what is in your programming, whether it’s a full-body strength session or accessory work supporting cardio or mobility training. Either way, the amp delivers a high quality workout.
“With the AI coach, you are a few taps away from pulling together a personalized workout based on your time and intent. It will be tailored to your level based on the strength assessment, which you can reassess at any point as your strength improves.
“Or, you can start by navigating through the app to preloaded workouts, which you can filter by time and select which body parts you want to focus on.
“With the personalization features, amp adapts to users at any fitness level.”
The amp device is a wall-mounted unit with a slim and minimalist design, intended to save space and be visually unobtrusive. Bear in mind you’ll need surrounding floor space to perform exercises with a full and safe range of motion.
The amp includes five training accessories:
- T-Bar: A bar-style attachment for push/pull movements (e.g. deadlifts, squats, rows)
- Single Handle: Ergonomic, non-slip, for unilateral exercises (e.g. one-arm rows, curls)
- Dual Handle: Wide-grip two-hand handle for bilateral movements (e.g. press, flyes, rows)
- Rope Attachment: For neutral grip exercises (e.g. tricep pushdowns, face pulls)
- Ankle Straps (2x): Padded straps for lower-body or isolation work (e.g. leg curls, kickbacks)
The device and shelf measure 6 feet (ft) x 2 feet (ft) x 1 foot (ft) in height, width, and depth. The total weight of the device is approximately 70 pounds (lbs).
It features a shelf that supports your phone and small accessories.
Nick’s Notes: amp’s footprint
“The recommended footprint is 7 (ft) x 7 (ft) x 3 (ft), with space included for exercises. The device itself does not take up that much space.
“I placed the amp in our workout and office space, on a stud toward the right side of the wall. While it’s closer to another wall, there is still plenty of space to complete exercises comfortably.
“It would appear as though there is a major install process, but the amp is actually minimally invasive into the wall. It sits along one major stud, with two primary points to drill into the mounting system, and then an additional screw is anchored in for the shelf. The amp system then sits on top of the mounting system.”
The amp device costs $1,795 upfront, excluding tax. A payment plan is available, with a monthly cost of $75 over 24 months. Payment plans are available, alongside the option to use HSA/FSA funds.
The app subscription costs $23 a month. The amp device comes with a one-year subscription commitment to the amp app.
Customers can take advantage of a 90-day home trial. If the amp doesn’t work for you, you can return it for free.
Currently, the amp is available only for pre-order, with a refundable reservation cost of $99 that contributes to the final total cost of the device.
Nick’s Notes: Competitor pricing
“I believe the amp provides meaningful value. It’s a fraction of the cost of the competitors, while packing a really competitive punch for value and function.”
Nick compares the amp to the following fitness devices, noting its relative affordability:
- Amp: $1,795
- Nordictrack Fusion: $2,259
- Tempo Studio Pro: $3,995
- Tonal 2: $4,295
White glove installation is included with delivery. Delivery is available in 48 U.S. states, excluding Alaska and Hawaii.
You may need to send photos or details about the desired installation site beforehand, so the installers can determine if the location is suitable. Note that installation requires drilling into the wall.
Some customers have discussed on Reddit that the company charges between $300 to $500 for relocation of the device around the home or to a new home. Customers should contact amp directly to clarify this cost before purchase if relocation is a possibility.
Nick’s Notes: How was delivery and setup?
“For anyone concerned (as I initially was), amp provides a white glove servicefor professional installation.
“A scheduling install date was booked, and the third party partner stayed in close contact. A team of two carried in the amp and installed the system in under one hour.
“The installers also connected the app to the device and shared a brief walk through of the application, machine function (resistance modes), and attachments.
